A constitutional amendment will be on the ballot on this election day that will protect same-sex marriage in Hawai'i.

In November, we have the opportunity to set right a wrong that was done nearly 30 years ago.

By voting "YES" on Constitutional Amendment Question #1, we can remove discriminatory language in our State Constitution that gives the Legislature the authority to reserve marriage for opposite-sex couples.

How did we get here?

The Hawaiʻi State Constitution currently allows the Legislature to limit marriage to opposite-sex couples, a provision added in 1998. However, this outdated language should be removed, especially since the Hawaiʻi Marriage Equality Act of 2013 legally recognizes same-sex marriages and provides them the same rights and benefits as opposite-sex marriages.

Why do we need this change now?

LGBTQ+ rights are increasingly under threat nationwide, and while Hawaiʻi is currently safe, outdated language in our Constitution still allows the possibility of the state legislature to repeal same-sex marriage.

With recent U.S. Supreme Court rulings raising concerns about reversing Obergefell v. Hodges, which legalized same-sex marriage nationwide, it's crucial to safeguard LGBTQIA+ marriage rights in Hawaiʻi by repealing this provision.

A blank vote is a "no" vote.

Our largest obstacles to getting this approved are low voter turnout and confusion. To ensure success, it's crucial that every voter in November supports the repeal by voting "YES" on Question #1: "Shall the state constitution be amended to repeal the legislature's authority to reserve marriage to opposite-sex couples?"

Remember, under state law, blank votes will be counted as "no" votes, making every ballot crucial.

What you can do!

We need to let every voter who supports marraige equality to Vote YES on Question 1.
